Probable Posttraumatic Narcolepsy

|
Narcolepsy is primarily characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) with or without cataplexy and is known to be related with hypocretin deficiency. Symptomatic narcolepsy could develop from various medical or neurological disorders. A 55-year-old man presented with a five-month-history of EDS that developed six months after traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage in quadrigeminal cistern. Multiple sleep latency test after nocturnal polysomnography showed shortened mean sleep latency and two sleep onset REM periods that suggested a possibility of posttraumatic narcolepsy. Symptomatic narcolepsy should be considered in cases with EDS and history of CNS injury.
